Underreported Story

Recently we are hearing recurring religious conflicts in different parts of the country. This dangerous wave of conflicts between the two religions with long history of harmony is recently turning uglier and uglier. Ethiopianbloggers were informed by some Gonder city residents that some Orthodox Christians are telling muslims to "go to their country." Similar conflicts were also reported in Dire Dawa and environs. This past timket, it was a common scene in Addis to see people wearing t-shirts with prints like "ethiopia yekrsiyan deseat nat." It is also reported that some Muslims were printing and distributing pamphlets that instigate violence against orthodox Christians. We also heard a report about a person who went to a church and yelled “allahu akber”, which is nothing other than instigating violence.
We at ethiopianbloggers believe that this is a dangerous trend we are noticing. Instead of taking sides and put gas on the burning fire, let us all calm down and think this horrible thing through. Pointing fingers won't do any one any good.
We hope everyone works together to kill this unnecessary and nonsensical conflict at its infancy. read the following reports on the story:

Ginbot 7 gaining momentum

Ginbot 7 Movement for Justice and Democracy is gaining momentum on its Ene Le Wegene $1 Million Campaign with significant increase in the number of support. The movement gets impetus as a result of Meles Zenawi’s new wave of war on peaceful struggle that worsens the political crisis in Ethiopia. According to a source close to G7, hundreds are contributing $ 500 from every corners of the world.

“People are tremendously approaching us from Australia to North America, from Africa to Europe,” the source said. “We are getting the requested contributions from USA, Canada, Germany, UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Denmark, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Norway, France, Finland, Australia, South Korea, Japan, Uganda, Kenya and South Africa.” It added.

Responding to question from EMF, the movement’s public relation said, “Although we have expected people’s positive responses to our request, it is very remarkable to see such a wonderful experience.”

As soon as the movement met its target, the next step will be action to save our country and our nation, according to the source.

"[Peaceful Struggle] Politics is Over"-Proffessor Mesfin

It is so amazingly scary how the Meles government is moving so fast in shutting up the ever tightening political space that has been opened up during the 2005 election. While many were holding tight hoping for a better day, we rather witness another intimidation and another imprisonment every passing day. It seems now that the cup is getting full. Almost everyone-including the most ardent advocates of peaceful struggle- seem to realize EPRDF is leaving no space open for peaceful struggle (read here).
We have no doubt that the people in Andinet party are one of the brightest and capable politicians Ethiopia has ever had. We also have no doubt about the love they have for their country and their willingness to sacrifice for the freedom of their fellow citizens. In ideal situations, we also agree with them that peaceful struggle should be the only way to change governments. But EPRDF is no ideal government for peaceful struggle. Meles and Co are bunch of thugs who have no regard for human rights and their own constitution. They have shown us time and again that any dissent can't go unpunished sooner or later (remember Teddy Afro’s case).
We highly recommend for our fellow opposition supporters to stop dividing along party lines. We should stand together against the ever worsening injustice in Ethiopia. Even when we disagree, let us disagree graciously.
Ethiopianbloggers stuff hopes that most people will stand with Ginbot 7 realizing the dire situation Ethiopia is in. EPRDF left us no option but to fight for our freedom and Ginbot 7 is, we believe, the only viable option to get our freedom and dignity back.
Let us get involved, as this is no time to sit idle and complain!

Former Ethiopian prime minister Tamrat Layne has been released from prison this morning. Its to be recalled that he has been sentenced to 18 years for corruption charges. He only served twelve years out of the eighteen.
